ok, so they come home. But the dog is still outside...
What the hell?
How can they just leave him there?
April turns to May, to June, to July.
This is ridiculous, everytime I look, that poor dog is sitting outside.
I walk Mackenna, and he whines and wags his tail and paws at the gate.
I run into my neighbor Elise, who walks her dog Logan religiously 3 times a day.
We stop in front of the house to talk about the dog.
"I just don't understand how they can leave him outside" I say
"I keep trying to talk to them about it, but they are never home. You can't just leave the dog outside in the summer like this. I've been in Al's backyard, there is no grass. They used to have that skate board ramp, it's all dirt. The dog is probably infested with fleas." Elise says.
I should tell you, Elise is very involved with dog rescue groups. She fosters dogs now and again until they are ready to be adopted. So she takes this all very seriously, and knows the laws.
It is now August. It's a Sunday, and it must be their turn to host the church, which they do in their garage. All I can hear is some kind of chanting, and wich my dad would turn up the Stones, or the Beetles to drown it out.
This is when Elise decides to take action. She waits for their "service" to be over and approaches them. This is when she gets the whole story...
The dog is not the family dog, the dog belongs to the son and his wife. The son and his wife moved from California to New York to help with the family business and the mortgage. The father, is off the boat Korean and doesn't believe in keeping pets. He doesn't want the dog in the house.
Elise explains, that it is against the law to keep a dog outside in all kinds of weather with no shelter. The father offers Elise the dog.
She takes him.
The dog is flea ridden. She gives him 3 baths, and a flea treatment. Then her son comes home and begins to have an allergic reaction.
She's not sure if it's the dog or the shampoo, but since she has a dog, she thinks it might be the breed.
Elise comes knocking on our door. She wants to know if we can take the dog and gives us the dirt. Of course my mom and I want to take him in immediately, but we have to convince my dad. He is obstinant. He will not budge. he doesn't want another fucking dog. They are too fucking expensive. Let someone else take him in. BLAH BLAH Fucking Blah.
It take 4 hours to break through.
By this time, Elise either had to get rid of the dog or take her son to the ER.
She caught up with the son and talked to him about animal care. He was really upset about the whole situation, but if any of you know, in the asian culture you really, REALLY respect your elders.
Elise convinces him that if you just give the dog a room in the house, it can't be all that bad. Plus the dog is a member of the family and all he wants is to bee with them.
The son readily accepts the dog back.
Just as I am running out to tell her that we will take him.
So August turns into September, and the family falls back into their same pattern. The dog is again outside, waiting for any grain of attention to be given to him.
